What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a tax professional who is authorized by the United States government to represent taxpayers in matters regarding the Internal Revenue Service. EAs are federally licensed, and their authority is granted by the IRS.

Enrolled Agents have the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS for matters such as audits, collections, and appeals. They can provide tax planning and preparation services, and they are knowledgeable about the complexities of the U.S. tax code. EAs are not restricted in terms of the clients they can represent, making them versatile tax professionals.

While Enrolled Agents are licensed at the federal level, they are not attorneys, and their practice is not limited to specific states. This makes them different from attorneys and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), who may be licensed at the state level and have different professional focuses.
